Promising Potential For Green Energy Supply In Penang - Fadillah

GEORGE TOWN, Aug 29 (Bernama) -- The potential for green energy supply in Penang is very promising, particularly at the Gelugor Power Station (SJG), which has been in operation for over 20 years, according to Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof.

The Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation said the collaboration between Tenaga Nasional Berhad Power Generation Sdn Bhd (TNB Genco) and the Penang Development Corporation (PDC) to develop energy sources at SJG would ensure the security and stability of the energy supply on the island.

"I’ve personally inspected the (SJC) site, and the potential for green energy supply in Penang is very promising. I am pleased to see this collaboration.

"This will not only create job opportunities but also increase the state’s revenue," he told reporters after witnessing the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between TNB Genco and PDC here tonight.

The MoU, signed by TNB Genco managing director Muhamad Nazri Pazil and PDC chief executive officer Datuk Aziz Bakar, marks the beginning of the process towards sustainable energy sources in the state. It will involve a feasibility study for the re-powering project and capacity upgrade of SJG, with its Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) set to expire at the end of this month.

Meanwhile, Muhamad Nazri said the project’s implementation plan is expected to be completed in two phases.

“The first phase will include the installation of an aeroderivative turbine with a capacity of 300 megawatts (MW) and a BESS with a capacity of 200MWh on a nine-acre vacant site, subject to the results of the feasibility study. The second phase will involve the installation of a 900 MW BESS on the remaining land.

"Once completed, this plant will be among the most modern in its class, with a unique design that is environmentally friendly and aesthetically pleasing. It will also reduce costs, as infrastructure such as gas pipelines and transmission lines are already in place," he said.

Aziz added that the MoU marks the beginning of the feasibility study process for the green energy development project, particularly at SJG, and he hopes it will pave the way for PDC to explore green and renewable energy in its new development areas.
