Emgs Programme Contributes To Reduction In Energy Consumption, Ghg Emissions - Nik Nazmi

KUALA LUMPUR, May 21 (Bernama) -- Since its inception in 2011, the Energy Management Gold Standard (EMGS) programme has achieved a yearly reduction of 203 Gigawatt-hours in electricity consumption and a decrease of 115 kilotons of carbon dioxide equivalent in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability, Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, highlighted that these reductions translate to cost savings of RM74 million.

“Since its launch in 2011, the EMGS programme under the ASEAN Energy Management Scheme (AEMAS) has provided support and encouragement for the implementation of sustainable energy practices and efficiency across various sectors.

“This achievement goes beyond mere statistics, it embodies the collaborative efforts of stakeholders towards effective energy management and environmental sustainability.

“These results signify proactive strides towards Malaysia's sustainable future, aligning with the goal of attaining net zero greenhouse gas emissions,” he said during his speech at the EMGS Certificate Award Ceremony today.

Nik Nazmi said so far, 184 organisations nationwide have participated in EMGS certification, with today's ceremony honouring 107 of them for their accomplishments with EMGS certificate awards.

He said the organisations involved represent a diverse range of facilities spanning both public and private sectors, including hospitals, health laboratories, clinics, research institutions, educational institutions, banks, office buildings and industrial establishments.

“This includes eight organisations receiving 1-Star certificates, 32 receiving 2-Star certificates and 67 receiving 3-Star certificates, with seven of these being renewals.

“We also present Special Awards to organisations excelling in energy reduction and those showing strong commitment to the programme across their facilities," he said.

Nik Nazmi stressed that efficient energy management is vital for mitigating climate change and promoting the country's green economic growth.

"As such, the ministry (NRES), along with the Ministry of Economy, the Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation, and agencies like the Energy Commission and the Sustainable Energy Development Authority, are committed to supporting efficient energy management programmes.

“This aligns with the targets in the National Energy Efficiency Action Plan 2016-2025 (NEEAP), National Energy Policy 2022–2040 (NEP) and National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR)," he said.
