Ecos To Focus On Strengthening Sesb After Regulatory Control Over Electricity

KOTA KINABALU, Jan 3 (Bernama) -- The Sabah Energy Commission (ECoS) has prioritised enhancing the operational capabilities of Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd (SESB) as its primary focus after the takeover of regulatory authority over power supply in the state from the Energy Commission (ST) today.

ECoS chief executive officer Datuk Abdul Nasser Abdul Wahid said enhancing SESB's financial capabilities is crucial for its sustainability, ensuring the smooth operation of the system.

He said in taking over the regulatory control, ECos had developed comprehensive plans and identified specific actions, which included enhancing SESB's capabilities as the primary distributor of electricity in the state.

“We have absorbed skilled workers from other agencies, including eight individuals from ST. We require approximately 90 staff, and over 70 positions have been filled. The remaining positions will be filled by recruits, all Sabahans,” he said during the handover ceremony here today.

Meanwhile, ST chief executive officer Datuk Abdul Razib Dawood, said that the handover to ECoS covers oversight in economic, technical, and electrical safety aspects.

"To ensure ECoS's readiness to take over ST's functions and tasks, planning and preparations began over two years ago.

“The handover included information technology, software, and document transfers, along with the integration of ST staff into ECoS,” he said.

He said meticulous preparations are crucial to ensure no disruptions in supply or operations for users, licence holders, and industries in Sabah following the handover.

"ST is confident that ECoS is fully prepared for the power supply takeover in Sabah and will continue to provide support when necessary.

“Considering the federal government's decision to retain control of power supply for the Federal Territory of Labuan, ST will set up an office in Labuan to ensure effective management of supply in the region,” he said.

Earlier, the Sabah state legislative assembly special sitting approved three bills related to the takeover of regulatory authority over power supply by the state government from the federal government.

The Sabah Energy Commission (Amendment) Bill 2024, the Sabah Renewable Energy Bill 2024 and the Electricity Supply Bill 2024, were approved with a majority of votes.
