Electricity Tariff Adjustment: 99 Pct Of Labuan, Sabah Domestic Consumers Unaffected

PUTRAJAYA, Dec 26 (Bernama) -- A total of 561,000 or 99 per cent of domestic consumers in Sabah and Labuan are unaffected by the adjustment in electricity tariff for the Jan 1 to June 30, 2024 period, the Energy Commission (ST) said in a statement today.

ST informed that the government on Dec 13 this year agreed that the electricity tariff adjustment under the Imbalance Cost Pass-Through (ICPT) mechanism be implemented based on retargeting of subsidies for Sabah and Labuan consumers for that period.

“Based on this retargeting of subsidies, the government has allocated RM161.70 million in subsidies to minimise the impact of the ICPT surcharge during this implementation period," read the statement.

ICPT refers to a mechanism under the Incentive-Based Regulation (IBR), which allows fuel costs to be adjusted every six months based on fluctuations in global fuel prices.

With the implementation of ICPT, no surcharge is imposed on domestic consumers (DM tariff) with monthly electricity consumption of 1,500 kilowatt-hours (kWj) and below.

For domestic consumers (DM tariff) with electricity consumption exceeding 1,500 kWh, an additional surcharge will be imposed at a rate of 7.21 sen/kWh. Similarly, non-domestic consumers will also incur a surcharge at the rate of 7.21 sen/kWh.

Meanwhile, the waiver of the ICPT surcharge is maintained for non-domestic consumers under the low voltage tariff category (CM1 and ID1 tariffs), which includes micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs).

"This ICPT surcharge waiver is also granted to non-domestic consumers, including water and sewerage operators in the low voltage tariff category (CM1 and ID1 tariffs)," read the statement.
