PUTRAJAYA, Dec 14 (Bernama) -- Digital development and the use of renewable energy are among the new aspects that need to be emphasised through industry and university collaboration for long-term benefit.
Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) Vice-Chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Mazlan Abd Ghaffar said the two components in question were fields of the future that were rapidly developing, therefore industry players and universities should take the first steps by starting to train students in those fields.
“For cooperation with telecommunication companies like Ericsson for example, they are huge companies that can carry out research and development (R&D) at universities.
“In Japan and Germany, industries work closely with universities to develop their research and then the products churned out are marketed,” he told Bernama after attending the 2023 UMT Industry Partner Appreciation Ceremony (MPRI-UMT) here today.
He said the collaboration between industries and universities in the country would also result in ‘mutual benefit’ which in turn would open up opportunities for students to be trained to enter the field of employment in a short time while also earning a premium salary of RM4,000 per month.
It is in line with the intention of the Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE) to target an increase in the percentage of graduates earning a premium salary of RM4,000 per month by boosting relations with industry players through specific and strategic measures.
According to Mazlan, UMT is also actively collaborating with industry partners including PKT Logistics Sdn Bhd, Tanjung Pelepas Sdn Bhd and Kuantan Port Consortium.
“The university’s main focus is strategic collaboration, with a target to streamline operations, technology and current practices and be able to provide long-term benefits to all parties,” he said.
From 2020 until now, he said UMT had implemented 95 projects in collaboration with industry partners through industry research grants involving an allocation of almost RM7.6 million.
The MPRI-UMT is a ceremony held every two years to accord recognition to industry players who have helped the university succeed in the aspects of talent empowerment, student development and excellence in research and innovation.
About 130 industry players including Bank Rakyat, Credit Counselling And Debt Management Agency (AKPK) and CelcomDigi Berhad were feted at the event with the presentation of the Industry Partner Awards.
At the same function, the Siswa Mall programme was launched in collaboration with CelcomDigi Bhd to support and encourage UMT students to conduct business through the e-commerce platform.
