KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 29 (Bernama) – In anticipation of the upcoming 28th Conference of the Parties (COP28) in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) reinforces its commitment to advancing the energy transition landscape across the wider region.

The COP28 platform will be held at Dubai’s Expo City from Nov 30 to Dec 12, 2023.

TNB president and chief executive officer Datuk Seri Baharin Din said the utility company’s commitment to COP28 aligns with its strategic objectives, aiming to reinforce its role in driving the energy transition within Malaysia and the wider region.

“Our participation enhances TNB’s presence as a key catalyst for change, highlighting the significant growth potential in Malaysia’s National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR) and positioning us as a leader in supporting the global energy transition (ET) by promoting sustainability and a greener future,” he said in a statement today.

Baharin said with Malaysia focusing on ET and the reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions at COP28, TNB’s participation in the global conference would emphasise the urgency for ET.

“TNB pledges net zero emissions by 2050, targeting a 35 per cent reduction in emissions intensity and 50 per cent less coal generation by 2035.

“We plan to enhance efficiency in our thermal plants, expand our renewable portfolio, and aim for 8,300MW of renewable energy (RE) by 2025,” he said.

TNB plans to amplify investments between 2025 and 2030, allocating RM90 billion, with a focus on energy transition.

This includes RM35 billion for transition-related projects, said the statement.

Meanwhile, approximately 40,000 delegates are expected to attend COP28 under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.

TNB will be joining the contingent of 200 Malaysian delegates at COP28, under the guidance of the Minister of Natural Resources, Environment, and Climate Change (NRECC), Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad.
