KUCHING, Oct 9 (Bernama) -- The monthly electricity bill discounts under the Sarawakku Sayang Special Assistance (BKSS) package given by the state government since April 1, 2020, and which were supposed to have ended on June 30 this year, will be extended until Dec 31, said Sarawak Utility and Telecommunications Minister Datuk Julaihi Narawi.
He said the state government decided to extend the discount period to enable domestic consumers to enjoy a 25 per cent reduction on their total bill while traders and small industrial operators received reductions of 15 and 10 per cent.
"The special electricity bill discounts will benefit 700,000 consumers throughout Sarawak,” he told a media conference here today.
According to him, the discounts will cost the state government an estimated RM203.7 million in expenditure, with RM123 million for domestic users and RM80.7 million for small traders. Previously, a total of RM1.15 billion was spent on the initiative from April 1, 2020 to June 30, 2023.
"The Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB) special task force will make the necessary adjustments and calculations to ensure consumers can get their discounts from July this year,” he said.
Julaihi said small traders, such as workshops, coffee shops, restaurants and hawker stalls can apply for monthly bill discounts by submitting their applications to the SEB until Dec 31.
According to him, eligibility for the discounts would be dependent on electricity consumption not exceeding 3,000kWh for the period from July 1 to Dec 31, 2023 and limited to users in the normal small traders and normal industry categories.
He said consumers who received electricity bills based on estimates could contact the SEB for the bills to be adjusted by producing a picture of the estimated bills and actual meter readings.
Requests for adjustments can be made through the 'Make a Report’ function in the SEB Cares application by calling the SEB Customer Service at 1300-88-3111, e-mail customercare@sarawakenergy.com or going personally to the SEB Customer Service counters.
