Central Medicare Taps Tnb's Solar Energy Expertise, Eyes Rm72 Mln Cost Reduction

President and chief executive officer Datuk Baharin Din

KUALA LUMPUR, July 23 (Bernama) -- Tenaga Nasional Bhd’s (TNB) collaboration with Central Medicare Sdn Bhd (CMSB) to introduce solar energy at the latter’s factory and hostel sites in Teluk Intan, Perak, is expected to help the glove maker reduce costs by up to RM72 million over 25 years.

With a total capacity of 6.039 megawatts peak (MWp), the rooftop solar photovoltaic system can reduce carbon emissions by about 5,215 metric tonnes per year, said Haziq Zairel Oh, group chief executive of CMSB’s parent company HARPS Global Pte Ltd.

He said this in a joint statement issued today by TNB and HARPS to announce the recent signing of a supply agreement with renewable energy (SARE) between HARPS and the utility firm’s wholly owned subsidiary, GSPARX Sdn Bhd.

TNB president and chief executive officer Datuk Baharin Din said the implementation of the green technology initiative aligns with the power producer's dedication to environmental, social, and governance (ESG) principles and aims to amplify the positive effects of eco-friendly progress while promoting universal well-being.

“The signing ceremony symbolises all parties' strong commitment to work together towards a common goal: achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050 through sustainable practices in our business and community ecosystems,” he said.

The installation will be completed in two phases -- the first by the end of September 2023 and the second by end-June 2024.

“Upon completion of the installation, the rooftop solar can deliver 8,163 megawatt hours of solar energy per year. This equates to more than 5,000 metric tonnes of carbon dioxide offset annually, equivalent to over 58 thousand tree seedlings grown for 10 years,” Baharin said.

Besides this SARE signing, CMSB successfully renewed its subscription to the Green Electricity Tariff with a capacity of 10 gigawatt hours in support of Malaysia's commitment to becoming a zero-carbon nation as early as 2050.

The SARE was signed in Ipoh on June 27, 2023, by Haziq Zairel, TNB retail division’s head of state retail (Perak) Mohd Azhar Rashid and GSPARX managing director Elmie Fairul Mashuri.

The signing was witnessed by TNB retail division’s state retail partner (Perak) lead Mohd Rohaizan Samsuddin and CMSB chief technology officer Lee Chee Sian.

Speaking at the event, Haziq said: “One of our core values in HARPS is sustainability. We place a strong emphasis on environmental conversations, and we are committed to minimising the potential impact of our operations on the environment.”

To date, GSPARX has secured 414 projects with commercial, industrial and government organisations, generating 279.2 MWp of solar capacity.
