KUALA TERENGGANU, June 12 (Bernama) -- The Terengganu state government’s strategic holding investment company, Terengganu Inc (TI) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Tenaga Nasional Bhd’s (TNB) Power Generation Sdn Bhd (TNB Genco) to study the feasibility of developing a floating solar photovoltaic plant at Tasik Kenyir.
TI chairman Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar said the study is aimed to identify some critical aspects before the 500 megawatts (MW) floating solar plant project is to be greenlighted.
“This MoU was made because the planned project is big... an expected 500MW solar pump to be built in Kenyir. Hence, TI has to ink an MoU with a party that specialises in this field, namely TNB Genco.
“After this study, we will make some important decisions regarding the implementation, including finding and determining our business partners. We need some interested companies, either our own government-linked companies or outside investors,” he said at a press conference after inaugurating the environmental, social and governance agenda (ESG Affairs 2023) programme, which was organised by TI, here today.
Ahmad Samsuri, who is also Terengganu Menteri Besar, said the 2,000-hectare project, which is expected to cost more than RM1 billion, is planned to be built at Tasik Kenyir as a measure to optimise the use of the area, which is one-third the size of Singapore.
“It is a floating solar farm. The only place where we have a large water body is there,” he said.
Meanwhile, TI executive director Burhanuddin Hilmi said the study will start within the next three months and is expected to take eight months to complete.
