70MW solar energy still available under NEM Rakyat Programme

KUALA LUMPUR, March 31 (Bernama) -- A quota of 70 megawatts (MW) solar energy is still available for Malaysians to apply under the Net Energy Metering (NEM) Rakyat Programme introduced by the government, the Senate was told today.

Deputy Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Datuk Ali Biju said the available  quota could accommodate up to 20,000 domestic consumers through the installation of photovoltaic (PV) solar.

However, there was still lukewarm response from the public to the programme as many were still not aware of the benefits of using solar energy.

"Actually, many people are not aware of the benefits of this programme which allows consumers to get a reduction in electricity bills of 30 to 80 per cent.

"Consumers can also finance the cost of installing this solar system through financing packages provided by solar suppliers, namely cash payments, interest-free flexible payments and bank loans," he said during the question and answer session at the Dewan Negara here today.

He was responding to a supplementary question from Senator Datuk Husain Awang on the obstacles facing the people in the country to install solar systems in their homes.

Meanwhile, Ali said the government was targeting to upgrade the country's solar energy consumption to 10 per cent.

"This is the direction we are heading for, which is to increase solar energy up to 10 percent in the country," he said in response to a supplementary question from Senator Tan Sri Mohd Radzi Sheikh Ahmad on the government's efforts to encourage the use solar energy in homes.
