KUALA LUMPUR, March 3 -- The Sultan Azlan Shah Power Station (SJSAS) in Manjung, Perak, has become a pilot station for the Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) floating solar farm project.
A TNB statement today said 288 photovoltaic (PV) solar panels have been installed on a 175-hectare ash pond with an installed capacity of 105.12kWp - equivalent to a reduction of 7.9 tonnes of carbon emission per month or carbon dioxide uptake by 409 trees. The electricity generated from this system is capable of meeting the needs of 30 houses.
TNB said the green energy generation initiative was a national energy transition, which is now its main agenda through its wholly-owned subsidiary TNB Power Generation Sdn Bhd (TNB Genco), with the purpose of energy sustainability.
“We (the utility company) will use any suitable area such as the ash dump pond at SJSAS to generate energy from solar sources by installing floating PV panels,” said the statement.
It said the project, which supported the Reimagining TNB (RT) aspiration, had the potential to become a floating solar farm that could generate at least 100MW of electricity.
“It is also part of RT’s innovative solution to create growth through future generation sources to address climate change and increase commitment towards Environment, Social and Governance (ESG).
"TNB's other sustainable energy solutions include large-scale solar farms (LSS) and rooftop solar panels," it said.
TNB said the floating solar farm, which saves land use and being a mobile asset, did not affect the pond's ecosystem and was easier to manage as water evaporation would operate as a natural cooling system.
