TNB backs gov't's national climate change, green technology agendas

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 12 -- Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) fully backs the stand of the government in spearheading the climate change and national green technology agendas announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob yesterday.

TNB chairman, Datuk Seri Hasan Arifin, in his statement, said TNB had taken proactive action by announcing the TNB Sustainability Pathway in the effort to minimise the impact in the increase of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions due to human activities.

“Under this pathway, we (TNB) have set the aspiration of achieving net zero emissions by 2050,” he said in a statement today.

Yesterday, Ismail Sabri announced Malaysia’s aim to reduce the intensity of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions across the economy by 45 per cent based on the Gross Domestic Product in 2030, which is 10 per cent higher than the previous target, made without any further conditions.

According to the Prime Minister, Malaysia’s stand on the matter will be tabled during the 26th Session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 26) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC COP-26) in Glasgow, Scotland from Oct 31 to Nov 12.

Commenting on TNB’s target for net zero emissions, Hasan said the aspiration was spurred by the commitment to reduce the emission intensity by 35 per cent, as well as reducing the capacity of generating electricity using coal to 50 per cent by 2035.

He said it was a low carbon strategic plan to contribute to a greener life, in line with international efforts to protect the earth for the good of all.

Meanwhile, TNB president/chief executive officer, Datuk Ir Baharin Din said TNB was committed to ensuring the income from coal plants did not exceed 25 per cent of its overall income and among the measures taken was by increasing allocations in research and development on renewable energy (RE).

“Early this year, we have stated our commitment to no longer invest in the construction of new coal plants after the Jimah East Power Station in Port Dickson, which began operating in 2019.

“We will work together with the government and all relevant parties concerned in a joint effort towards achieving the aspirations of net zero emissions,” said Baharin.
