GEORGE TOWN, Sept 28 -- Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) is collaborating with local solar energy company Ditrolic Energy Solutions Sdn Bhd to develop a solar energy project to reduce the university's dependence on electricity.
USM vice-chancellor Datuk Dr Faisal Rafiq Mahamd Adikan said USM took the initiative to collaborate with the company in a bid to use alternative solar energy to generate more effective and environmentally friendly electricity through the installation of photovoltaic (PV) solar systems with a maximum capacity of 10,662.25 kilowatt peak (kWp) in more than 90 locations on the USM main campus.
"This project is expected to reduce the dependence on electricity from Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) and save the university's utility costs in the long run by about 30 per cent,” he told Bernama after the Solar Power Purchase Agreement signing ceremony with the company’s representatives at the USM Chancellery Building today.
He said that with a maximum total capacity of 10,662.25 kWp, USM can accommodate system energy up to 40 per cent of its annual energy consumption from the renewable energy source.
"USM is also optimistic of plans to implement the same project outside the main campus, namely the Engineering Campus (near Nibong Tebal), with other companies around June or July next year.
"It is hoped that this process will run smoothly in line with the 12th Malaysia Plan (12MP), which focuses on sustainable development as a whole," he said.
He added that the cooperation in the installation of the solar PV systems through a Request for Proposal (RFP) offer is the first to be implemented in a Malaysian public university.
