MELAKA, Sept 17 -- Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTeM) has won the award for the Energy Management in Large Building category at the ASEAN Energy Awards (AEA) 2021 organised by the ASEAN Centre for Energy, recently.
UTeM deputy vice-chancellor (Research and Innovation) who is carrying the functions of UTeM vice-chancellor, Prof Ir Dr Ghazali Omar said the award was announced at the 39th ASEAN Ministers on Energy Meeting (AMEM) held in Brunei Darussalam.
He said AEA is the highest award in Southeast Asia aimed at encouraging and recognising the participation and interest of the public and private sectors in energy development in the region.
“UTeM has brought a new, more comprehensive and unique shift in energy management sustainability for large buildings in university campuses.
"The factor has led to a consistent reduction in energy consumption in addition to the implementation of other effective programmes that have been successful with all UTeM staff and students with the tagline 'Bangkit Bersama, Cekap Tenaga' (Rise Together, Energy Efficient)," he said in a statement here today.
Meanwhile, UTeM's assistant vice-chancellor (Facilities Development and Management), Assoc Prof Ts Mohd Rahimi Yusoff said UTeM's success in Southeast Asia had a huge impact on UTeM, the country and the world.
He said following the success, UTeM is now a source of reference for other institutions and organisations to collaborate in the success of energy management sustainability programmes.
He said it also provided an advantage for the country to promote sustainable energy management programmes at the international level as a reference source in the Southeast Asian region.
“UTeM is now also focusing on becoming an excellent institution in research and practice related to Demand Side Management (DSM) and achieving the UTeM Seven Strategic Goals (SSG) within the next 5 years.
"Among the achievements targeted by UTeM is to be among the 50 best universities in the world in the UI Green Matrix ranking," he said.
