KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 11 -- The Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources (KeTSA) announced that 26 winners of the National Energy Awards (NEA) 2021 have been selected to represent Malaysia at the ASEAN Energy Awards (AEA) 2021.

AEA is Southeast Asia’s highest award for excellence in the field of energy.  AEA 2021 will be held virtually in September and hosted by Brunei Darussalam.

Minister Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan has expressed hope that all of Malaysia’s submissions will emerge as winners at AEA 2021.

“I am proud that more than 40 out of 69 Malaysian participating organisations had received recognition at the AEA. This augurs well for our aspiration in transitioning our electricity supply industry to a more sustainable, reliable, and affordable energy system. These achievements have also illustrated Malaysia's efforts in driving the sustainable energy agenda,” he said in his keynote address at the 4th NEA 2021 winners announcement held virtually today.

The recipients of AEA 2021 will be announced in mid-September 2021, in conjunction with the 39th ASEAN Ministers on Energy Meeting (AMEM).

The NEA was introduced in 2018 as a strategic endeavour to recognise the achievements and best practices of local companies and organisations in embracing sustainable energy initiatives.

The NEA has been instrumental in identifying the best energy efficiency (EE) practices and renewable energy (RE) initiatives by Malaysian companies and organisations, said Takiyuddin.

Since its inception in 2018, NEA has attracted the participation of over 400 organisations, with more than 54 organisations receiving the coveted awards.

“A total of 69 organisations had been selected to represent Malaysia at the ASEAN Energy Awards over the years,” he noted.

In addition, the minister said NEA has also expanded its scope since 2020 by introducing the special awards category for institutions of higher learning, energy performance contracting or EPC projects, and financial institutions.

The new category was introduced to recognise industry players who have implemented or supported the country’s RE and EE development agenda.

Takiyuddin said he hopes that the NEA will evolve from a key industry platform to identify Malaysia's best organisations in the implementation of RE and EE initiatives to a knowledge-sharing avenue for all sectors in the region, and consequently, position Malaysia as the regional market leader in sustainable energy.

“As energy is central to economic development, efforts to lower our country’s carbon footprints in the sector through the adoption of sustainable practices can only be achieved with the support from all stakeholders,” he said.
