IPOH, Sept 1 -- The installation of photovoltaic (PV) solar panels at the Perak Urban Transformation Centre (UTC) building here can help the Ipoh City Council (MBI) save up to RM2.5 million throughout the 21-year Supply Agreement of Renewable Energy (SARE) contract.
Ipoh mayor Datuk Rumaizi Baharin said the installation of PV solar panels, which was fully completed at the end of July, was MBI’s first project in collaboration with Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) and its subsidiary GSPARX Sdn Bhd (GSPARX).
“These PV solar panels can help MBI save a total of RM47,964 in electricity bills in the first year of the project.
“This is MBI’s first project on the use of solar energy and we plan to expand it to other MBI-owned buildings such as the Perak Stadium, Indera Mulia Stadium and Swimming Pool Complex,” he said in a news conference after inspecting the project at the UTC building here today.
Rumaizi said the project could also indirectly realise MBI’s aspiration to make Ipoh the country’s fourth smart and low-carbon city by 2030.
Meanwhile, Perak TNB retail head Ir Mohd Azhar Abd Rashid said TNB was ready to assist local authorities in the state in terms of solar panel installation so as to help reduce carbon emissions rate and electricity bills.
“We have a few solutions to reduce electricity usage in government buildings and one of them is through the installation of solar panels on the roof,” he said.
