JASIN, Aug 31 -- This year’s 64th National Day celebration has become even more meaningful for the Orang Asli community in Kampung Bukit Meranti here as their homes are finally lit up by solar-powered lamps.
The life of 15 Temuan people from six families is brighter now and they no longer have to rely on candles or oil lamps to keep them out of the darkness.
For housewife Kuntum Tepung, 29, the solar-powered lights helped ease her nightly household chores and keep her children comfortable while studying at night.
“All this while, we have been relying on candles and oil lamps. Now, we no longer have to worry about house fires. Both my children are thrilled and we can even organise community programmes at night.
“There are some of us here who use the generator but it is costly as you have to spend RM240 a month on petrol. So, when we were told that we would be getting solar lights, it made us happy and we feel safer at night,” she told reporters when met recently.
Meanwhile, solar project director Mohd Ashwad Abdul Rahim said six solar-powered lights were donated by a non-governmental organisation, Unit Response Team Aslam Resources, through the ‘Sentuhan Merdeka’ programme.
“We give each house two solar-powered lights which they can place outside and inside the house. We hope this assistance will give them hope to enjoy a more meaningful and happy life like other villages,” he said.
