KUALA LUMPUR, July 9 -- Malaysia Marine and Heavy Engineering Holdings Bhd's (MHB) operation yard, MMHE West in Pasir Gudang, Johor is now powered by solar panels.
This was following the completion of rooftop solar photovoltaic (PV) panels installation by M by Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas), the energy industry and marine solutions provider said in a statement today.
M is the solar solution brand of Petronas, where the agreement would run for 21 years until 2042.
MHB said installation of the 8.3 megawatt peak (MWp) solar rooftop at MMHE West represented the largest rooftop solar installation in a single compound within Malaysia.
The 18,720 units of solar PV panels with a total size of 440,496 square feet (sq ft) would provide energy for eight buildings at MMHE West.
These panels collectively generate an estimated 10,000-megawatt hours (MWh) of clean energy each year.
“This subsequently translated to a reduction of about 6,286 tonnes of carbon emissions into the atmosphere annually.
This amounts to 132,000 tonnes of carbon emissions reduced throughout the 21 years which is equivalent to planting two million trees,” said MHB.
The power generated from the solar PV panels is sufficient to light up 725 double-storey homes for a full year.
It is estimated that RM30 million would be saved in electricity bills in 21 years.
