Shell petrol station first to receive Gold GBI certification

KUALA LUMPUR, May 3  -- Shell Malaysia's petrol station located at Mint Hotel (along the Kuala Lumpur-Seremban Expressway) here has become the first station in the country to be awarded the Provisional Gold Standard by the Green Building Index (GBI).

The station is integrated with a multifaceted approach of combining both renewable energy (RE) and energy-efficient (EE) innovations that reflects the GBI Gold Standard requirements.

Shell Malaysia Trading and Shell Timur Sdn Bhd managing director Sharian Huzani Husain said the solar photovoltaic (PV) rooftop system at the station is able to generate almost 90,575 kilowatt-hour (KWh) of electricity per year, enough to power an average of 382 households per month.

He said the electricity generated through the solar power panels would also able to reduce the station’s carbon emission by 62.8 tonnes per annum, which is equivalent to saving 1,118 trees.

"Shell Mint Hotel Station is our latest milestone towards fulfilling this commitment.

"We aim to achieve net zero emission in all of our operations by 2050. So far we have 150 stations powered by the sun and by end of 2021, we aim to have a total of 300 solar-powered and 40 GBI-certified sites," he said in a virtual meeting here today.

Currently, Shell has three GBI-certified sites while five other stations are being assessed for GBI certification.

Meanwhile, Sharian said another feature of the Shell Mint Hotel station is its food waste composting machine that converts food waste into fertilizers.

The station is capable of collecting about 30 kilogramme (kg) of food waste every day and convert it into six kg of fertilizers; which is equivalent to producing up to 2,190 kg of fertilizers in a year that can fertilize up to 4,000 potted plants.

He added that riding on its own in-house RE, EE and electric vehicle (EV) charging solutions, Shell hopes to be a pioneer in green energy initiatives and inspire more companies to embark on the journey.
