MPIA sees positive growth in solar PV industry, expects more NEM quota allocation

KUALA LUMPUR, April 12 -- Malaysia is seeing "very positive growth” in both the rooftop and large scale solar (LSS) segments of the country’s solar photovoltaic industry, according to the Malaysian Photovoltaic Industry Association (MPIA).

President Davis Chong said that more than 2,400 megawatts (MW) of LSS projects had been awarded so far, including the 823 MW in the fourth LSS (LSS4) package awarded recently.

It also noted that in the first week of April, more than 100 MW applications were submitted by the commercial and industrial sectors.

“We will not be not surprised if the entire 300 MW allocated for the commercial and industrial sectors are fully taken by the middle of this year. We look forward to more allocation from the government after the full uptake,” he said in a statement today.

Chong said the growth would translate into a significant milestone for Malaysia in terms of sustainability and renewable energy accomplishment.

“Many businesses are now deploying solar photovoltaic (PV) systems as part of their measures to reduce the cost of doing business, as it gives them significant saving in energy bills.

“In addition, it is very positive to their corporate image, with some companies able to sell their products or services at a premium over their peers,” he said.

He said the Sustainable Energy Development Authority (SEDA) had revealed that close to 4,000 net energy metering (NEM) installations were completed towards the end of last year, and the entire 500 MW NEM quota under the NEM 2.0 programme was fully taken up before the Dec 31, 2020 deadline.

Subsequently, a further 500 MW quota was announced under NEM 3.0.

The application of NEM 3.0 for residential and governmental sectors was opened from Feb 1 while application for the commercial and industrial sectors began from April 1.

In the statement, MPIA also announced its new committee line-up for the 2021-2023 term which was elected at the association’s 14th annual general meeting on March 31.

In addition to Chong, the committee includes Datuk Ir Muhammad Guntor Mansor Tobeng (vice president), Michael Leong (secretary), Joe Wong (assistant secretary) and Samuel Soon (treasurer).
