KUALA LUMPUR, March 24 -- Tenaga Nasional Bhd’s (TNB) maiden large scale solar (LSS) farm in Sepang has exceeded its maximum annual energy declared for two consecutive years through smart plant management combined with the adoption of artificial intelligence and data analytics technologies.

The utility giant said the solar power plant surpassed its maximum annual energy declared to the off-taker (TNB) by 6.0 per cent or at more than 110,000 megawatt-hours (MWh) in its first operational year in 2019.

It said this commendable operational performance was replicated in 2020, with the solar farm generating 108,900 MWh or 5.0 per cent more than declared.

“We are able to optimise this solar farm’s operation by leveraging data analytics and monitoring technologies,” TNB Renewables Sdn Bhd (TRe) managing director Mohd Yusrizal Mohd Yusof said in a statement today.

TRe is a wholly-owned subsidiary of TNB.

Mohd Yusrizal said the technologies used have allowed TNB to, among others, calculate the best timing to wash the solar panels based on output levels and weather forecast.

“By utilising the latest analytics tool (wash optimisation), we can save up to RM160,000 of operation cost annually.

“TRe is committed to adopting innovative solutions in building up TNB’s capability towards becoming a leading RE (renewable energy) asset developer and asset manager within Malaysia and the region,” he said during a visit by TNB directors, Datuk Ir Nawawi Ahmad and Datuk N. Rawisandran to the solar farm last week.

Nawawi, who was impressed by the LSS’s performance, said the plant reflected TNB’s strength in developing and running successful solar farm projects in Malaysia.

“With the experience gained so far, I hope TNB can continue expanding the growth of RE in the country through the developments of more solar farms,” he said.

Meanwhile, Rawisandran said the latest technological solutions employed at the solar farm have enabled TNB to maximise the plant’s efficiency and generate more clean power to the national grid.

Located at Mukim Tanjung 12, Kuala Langat, Selangor, the 50 Megawatt (MW) solar farm is equipped with 238,140 solar photovoltaic panels.

The solar farm, which began commercial operation in November 2018 and managed by TRe, has contributed to TRe winning the Frost & Sullivan’s Best Practices Awards for 2020 Malaysia Renewable Energy Developer of the Year.

Besides LSS Sepang, TRe also developed the 30 MW LSS Bukit Selambau in Sungai Petani, Kedah, which started its commercial operation on Sept 8, 2020, 114 days ahead of schedule and is equipped with 134,880 solar photovoltaic panels.

Both LSS Sepang and LSS Bukit Selambau were awarded by the Ministry of Energy, Green Technology and Water (now the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources) through the Energy Commission via the LSS competitive bidding exercise programme 1 and programme 2, respectively.

TNB is one of the 30 companies shortlisted by the Energy Commission to bid for the development of the fourth large-scale solar (LSS4)@MEnTARI.
