Sarawak Energy to be key player to reduce nation's carbon emission

By Robert Kenneth Henry

KUCHING, March 4 -- Sarawak Energy Bhd will be a key player in reducing the nation’s carbon emission intensity by 45 per cent by 2030 and in fulfilling the United Nations' 21st Conference of Parties in Paris (COP 21) commitments, chairman Datuk Amar Abdul Hamed Sepawi told Bernama.

He said this can materialise because Sarawak’s large hydroelectric power plants had led to a reduction in carbon intensity for power generation by 68 per cent from 2011 to 2019.

"It is only right that (the Sarawak hydroelectric projects in) Bakun, Murum, Batang Ai and eventually Baleh be counted in Malaysia’s renewable energy target of 31 per cent by 2025 and 40 per cent by 2035.

“As we move forward in building a sustainable energy future with all our stakeholders, we will continue to invest in research, technology and innovation to progress a green energy agenda for Sarawak,” he said at the term sheet signing ceremony between Syarikat SESCO Bhd, a subsidiary of Sarawak Energy, and Malaysia LNG Sdn Bhd, a Petronas subsidiary, today.

He said besides successfully commissioning Southeast Asia’s first Integrated hydrogen production plant and refuelling station in Kuching in 2019 under the Sarawak government-funded project, Sarawak Energy also aims to have about four per cent of solar photovoltaic (PV) in its power generation mix by 2030, following the plan to commission its first floating solar power plant at the Batang Ai hydroelectric project.

Abdul Hamed said Sarawak Energy also launched Sarawak’s first renewable energy certificate (REC) to allow greater participation from corporations in a more sustainable energy future so they could source 100 per cent of electricity from renewable sources and boost renewable energy uptake and integration.

As the energy arm of the Sarawak government, Sarawak Energy’s corporate vision and business model is leading the transition to a sustainable energy future at both the national and regional level.

“We are delighted to note that the Government of Malaysia now recognised large hydroelectric power as part of our national renewable energy generation mix.

On the term sheet signing, he said Sarawak Energy would supply 90 megawatts of electricity to the Malaysia LNG Complex in Tanjung Kidurong, Bintulu for a period of 20 years starting from March 2024.
