Serba Dinamik, MYSA to collaborate on new space economy

KUALA LUMPUR, Mar 3  --  Serba Dinamik  Group Bhd and the Malaysian Space Agency (MYSA) will work together to further strengthen the development of space economy and industry in Malaysia.

 Serba Dinamik  group managing director and group chief executive officer Datuk Dr Mohd Abdul Karim Abdullah said Malaysia has yet to participate in the “new space economy” despite being equipped to do so.

“To address this, MYSA has taken initiatives, through the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI), to introduce the Malaysian Space Board Bill 2020, which was tabled for its first reading last year.

“The Bill functions to advise the government on matters pertaining to the space industry, and we believe Malaysia would explore the potential in venturing into the new space economy.

“We fully support initiatives that promote more private and public partnerships among the industry players. Space is the next area that we are exploring,” he said in a collaboration ceremony between  Serba Dinamik  and MYSA held virtually today. 

Space economy is defined as the full range of activities and use of resources that create value and benefit to human beings in the course of exploring, researching, understanding, managing, and utilising space.

During the ceremony,  Serba Dinamik  received a letter of support from MYSA director-general Azlikamil Napiah. 

The energy services group also signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Switzerland-based company, SWISSto12, at the event.

With the MoU, it is expected that SWISSto12 will provide support to  Serba Dinamik  and partners in their space initiatives.

SWISSto12 specialises in innovative products leveraging upon patented 3D printing technologies and designs.

Meanwhile, Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Khairy Jamaluddin said Malaysia fully recognised that space science, technology, and its application plays a significant role towards creating a better world, especially in realising the 2030 agenda for sustainable development.  

“I am happy to announce that we are on the path to be the first ASEAN nation to produce a Space Board Bill that will regulate the space industry in Malaysia,” he said in his keynote address at the ceremony.

The text of his speech was delivered by MOSTI Deputy Minister Datuk Ahmad Amzad Hashim.

Khairy Jamaluddin said the space industry has transformed into something completely new with the demand for data, images, and information obtained from satellites.

“The wide usage of space technology and its application in all sectors, especially in the era of Internet of Things and liquid data, where the usage of Internet application has doubled, has created a huge potential for the space sector to become a major economic contributor to Malaysia,” he said. 

In addition, he said the national Space Policy 2030 recognises the need for access to space capabilities to improve public services and national security.

“It will also be a reference point in determining the direction of space sector development in Malaysia.

“The government understands that space activities, especially satellite communication, remote sensing, and navigation application will have an immense effect on the national economy and societal well-being,” he said.     

The minister pointed out that with this policy, the government will be able to monitor and supervise its national space activities effectively in accordance with international law.

“The Malaysian government’s effort will be more focused on the development of space technology, infrastructure, and applications that have an impact on both economic and social safety, specifically in the space sector arena, remote sensing, communication, and navigation.

“These focus areas will contribute to critical needs such as planning and management of natural resources, weather and climate prediction, search and rescue, disaster management, infrastructure monitoring, mapping, navigation, and safety,” he added.
