Melaka to invest RM1.5 bln on reclamation, oil and gas projects



MELAKA, Feb 25 -- The Melaka government and the Melaka State Development Corporation (PKNM) will embark on a project to reclaim 180 hectares of sea in the Umbai sub-district, near here, soon.

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Sulaiman Md Ali said the project which would involve an investment of RM1.5 billion including the development of oil and gas industry on the area to be reclaimed.

‘’PKNM will implement a hydraulic and an Impact Environment Assessment (EIA) study in a two-year period from Feb 21, 2021 upon signing the agreement.

‘’Meanwhile, the sea reclamation project will take 12 months from the date the agreement was signed,’’ he said.

‘’We are confident the development of the project will have a major impact on the economy of the state in future,’’ he told reporters at Seri Negeri, Ayer Keroh here today.

Earlier, Sulaiman signed the agreement with PKNM which was represented by deputy chairman Datuk Roslan Ahmad.

In the meantime, Sulaiman said the state government would also focus on implementing maritime industrial development as a form of investment capable stimulating Melaka’s economy.

He said PKNM, through its subsidiary, PM Multilink Sdn Bhd also held a joint venture with AWH Marine Sdn Bhd to undertake maritime-linked projects in the area three nautical miles along the waters of Melaka.

‘’The projects also support the development of related oil and gas industry as AWH Marine Sdn Bhd has experience and expertise in implementing and managing activities such as transfers from ships,’’ he added.
