MGA looks forward to Natural Gas Roadmap

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 4 -- Malaysian government’s policies and initiatives, especially the National Energy Policy and Natural Gas Roadmap (NGR) which are currently being drafted, should be on par with those of other leading gas producing countries. 

Malaysian Gas Association (MGA) president Hazli Sham Kassim said MGA has been calling for NGR to be developed since 2018 in order to future-proof the industry by ensuring security of supply, increasing demand and liberalising the market.

“We eagerly look forward towards its release in the first quarter (of 2021),” he said in a statement today.

Yesterday, MGA, the nation’s lead advocate for the natural gas industry, successfully coordinated the 7th International Energy Forum (IEF)-International Gas Union (IGU) Ministerial Gas Forum with the theme "Towards Recovery and Shared Prosperity: Natural Gas Opportunities for a Sustainable World".

This biennial event, which was hosted by the Economic Planning Unit of the Prime Minister’s Department, was jointly organised by IEF and IGU. It was held virtually for the first time in Kuala Lumpur.

The event was inaugurated by Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin. Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Economy) Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed jointly moderated the ministerial forum with IGU president Prof Joe Kang and IEF secretary-general Joseph McMonigle.

Hazli Sham said another consistent theme during the roundtable discussions was the important role of natural gas in energy transition in providing secure, affordable and sustainable baseload energy source in synergy with the growing but often, intermittent renewable energy sources. 

“This synergy gives rise to significant investment opportunities, not only in upstream but across the value chain,” he said.

He also expressed his gratitude to Muhyiddin and Mustapa for the trust given to realise the prestigious and high-level forum that was successfully executed virtually for the first time since IEF-IGU Ministerial Gas Forum's inception in 2008.  

“The session was timed to enable participations from different global time zones.

"In total, 13 energy ministers, 16 senior government officials, 12 heads of international organisations and 40 industry leaders from Asia, Middle East, Africa, Europe, North America and South America took part in the event,” he added.
