Promoting environmental sustainability through Green Houses of worship programme

PUTRAJAYA, Nov 30 -- The Environment and Water Ministry (KASA) through the Malaysian Green Technology and Climate Change Centre (MGTC) is implementing the Green Houses of Worship Programme as an initiative to preserve the environment at the community level.

Minister Datuk Seri Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man said mosques and houses of worship selected for the programme would be models of social institutions that are environmentally friendly, deploying energy, water, waste management, low carbon efficiency and green technologies.

The programme focuses on five key elements, namely saving on electricity consumption, water consumption, especially when performing ablution in mosques and surau, reducing and proper management of wastes, encouraging purchase and use of green products and generating economic opportunities for recycling activities, he said.

The environmental sustainability agenda should be the concern of all parties and I call on all sectors, be it public or private, to emulate and plan programmes which contribute positively to the local community and the environment," he said.

He said this in his speech at the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between MGTC and RHB Islamic Bank Bhd for the implementation of the Green Houses of Worship Programme and Support of Green Growth Initiative, here today.

At the signing, MGTC was represented by Chief Executive Officer Shamsul Bahar Mohd Nor while RHB Islamic Bank was represented by Managing Director Datuk Adissadikin Ali.

Tuan Ibrahim said KASA has targeted 100 green houses of worship by next year, adding that all agencies and departments have been instructed to select 12 houses of worship in eight states for its initial programme.

"The target set shows we are serious in cultivating a sustainable lifestyle among the community and this must be done more systematically,” he said.

He urged more corporate companies to fund initiatives under this programme especially in the installation of Solar PV under the NET Energy Metering programme, adding that RHB Islamic Bank was the first to express its commitment to the programme.
