KOTA BHARU, Nov 26 -- Hess Corporation subsidiary Hess Malaysia is recognised as a company that adopts best practices in the implementation of corporate social responsibility (CSR) projects in the country.
The crude oil and natural gas production company said in a statement here today that the recognition was given by the American Malaysian Chamber of Commerce (AMCHAM) under the MY AMCHAM CARES 2020 programme.
Hess senior vice-president for global production Gerbert Schoonman said the recognition marked the progress that had been made in meeting the company's social responsibility goals in Asia.
"Our goal is to help meet the growing needs of the world's energy through ways that can protect the health and safety of our employees, protect the environment and contribute to the sustainability of the communities in which we operate," he said.
In the same statement, Asia Hess vice-president Zhao Zhiyong said the company's objective, in Malaysia and other countries, was to produce a long-term positive impact on the local community.
"The main thrust of our approach in carrying out social responsibility in Malaysia is through support for education, disaster relief and playing a role in alleviating the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic," he said.
Meanwhile, AMCHAM chief executive officer Siobhan Das praised Hess Malaysia's efforts in implementing a well-established CSR project as well as ensuring that the approach used is strategic, sustainable, measurable and well communicated, especially at the local community level.
Hess Malaysia has donated more than 60,000 units of personal protection equipment such as face masks, hand sanitisers and medical gloves to several hospitals, health clinics and police headquarters in Kelantan and Terengganu.
The company also donated about 4,000 meals to frontline staff and the underprivileged community in Kelantan, distributed by Hess volunteers.
"Hess Malaysia is also continuing its annual disaster relief programme on the East Coast which has been implemented over the past few years, including a flood relief campaign to assist in recovery efforts to alleviate the burden of those affected by the disaster," Hess Corporation noted.
In addition, the company also supports the MyKasih ‘Love My School’ Student Bursary Programme in Kelantan which offers financial assistance in the form of cashless bursaries to 80 students from underprivileged families in the Orang Asli community.
