TNB, MBS collaborate to reduce carbon footprint

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 27 -- Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB), through its renewable energy retail arm GSPARX Sdn Bhd, has inked an agreement with the Seremban City Council (MBS) to install solar panels on the rooftop of the council’s office building.

Under the 21-year Supply Agreement of Renewable Energy (SARE) inked yesterday, MBS was expected to save up to RM3.2 million in electricity bills, TNB said in a statement today.

The solar panel installation, with a capacity of 720 kilowatt peak (kWp), is expected to be completed in April 2021.

TNB said the project, which is expected to generate about 919,800 kWh of green energy in the first year, would be able to offset carbon emission from the burning of 385 tonnes of coal per year. This is equivalent to carbon dioxide absorption by 849 acres (343.6 hectares) of forest per year.

The agreement was signed by MBS mayor Datuk Zazali Salehudin and GSPARX managing director Elmi Fairul Mashuri in Seremban, witnessed by Negeri Sembilan Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun.

MBS was the third local authority to sign the agreement with TNB, after Johor Bahru City Council and Seberang Perai City Council, to tap GSPARX’s expertise in rooftop solar panel installation and operation, TNB said.

Through GSPARX, TNB has formed partnerships with entities like city councils and corporations to enable more electricity consumers to be prosumers.

To date, under the photovoltaic solar panels scheme, Net Energy Metering and self-consumption, implemented by the government, about 310 customers had inked agreements with GSPARX through SARE and direct purchase to generate about 54 MWp of green energy.
