KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 7 -- Universiti Teknologi Petronas (UTP) has received a total of 890 submissions and participation from pre-school to secondary school across the state for E-STREAM Waves 2020 virtual event.
A Science, Technology, Reading, Engineering, Arts and Mathematic event, E-STREAM Waves is the university’s Social Responsibility Education Pillar project in collaboration with the Atomic Energy Licensing Board (AELB), Ministry of Science, Technology, and Innovation (MOSTI), Pertubuhan Rakan Komuniti Pendidikan Perak (PRKPP) with the support from the Ministry of Education (MOE). The virtual event of the closing ceremony of the E-STREAM (Science, Technology, Reading, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) Waves 2020 was officiated by Perak Menteri Besar, Datuk Seri Ahmad Faizal Datuk Azumu.
Also present at the closing ceremony were PRKPP Chairman Datin Normah Hanum Datuk Ibrahim, AELB Director General Mohd Pauzi Mohd Sobari, together with representatives from MOSTI, MOE and Perak State Education Department.
Launched in last May, UTP in a statement said the project was designed to answer the unforeseen challenges brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic.
“With the nation’s children being kept away from schools and staying at home, it was decided that the E-STREAM Waves was to be publicised, organised and judged completely in virtual mode,” it said.
A total of eight competitions and challenges were created for children and young people, focusing on reading and arts - Reading Duo, Wipeout Workout, Wipeout Colouring, My Voice and Pitching - competition.
“These challenges and competitions revolved around the participant’s current experience of being locked down at home as well as their thoughts about COVID-19.
“These competitions focused on tapping into the participant’s creativity and innovation in relation to scientific knowledge as well as hands-on productions of home-made projects,” said the statement.
A total of 890 submissions and participations from almost every state in the country were received. From this, 140 participants were awarded achievement e-certificates while the remaining participants were awarded e-certificates of participation.
On top of this, 24 participants from across pre-school to secondary school were awarded cash prizes for being the ‘Best of the Best’. As a special gesture, two schools were awarded the Challenge Trophy for the Best of the Best and Trophy for School with the Most Submissions, respectively. They are SMK Ghaffar Baba, Melaka for the Challenge Trophy for the Best of the Best and SMK Kampung Gelam, Melaka for the School with the Most Submissions.
This event had been successful in seeing firm partnerships built across university, schools, governmental agencies and NGOs, all for the singular aim of bringing out the best in the nation’s upcoming generation. With continued support from UTP, AELB, PRKPP and MOE, the event has every potential to grow to become the flagship platform for linking community with the university.
UTP has produced more than 19,000 graduates and currently has an enrolment of over 1,200 foundation students, 6,000 undergraduates and 1,200 postgraduates from more than 60 countries around the world.
