COVID-19: MOH, TNB issue call to action to corporate Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR, March 20 -- The Health Ministry (MOH) and Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) have initiated an action coalition to encourage corporate companies in Malaysia to collaborate with the government and work together to fight the COVID-19 outbreak in the country.

“The ‘Corporate Malaysia Against COVID-19 Action Coalition’ calls on private companies, government-linked companies (GLCs) and other organisations to pledge financial support to MOH to help replenish diminishing medical supplies as the country struggles to contain the COVID-19 outbreak,” MOH and TNB said in a joint statement, today.

As the corporation leading this call to action, TNB has pledged RM10 million to the MOH recently, it said.

MOH secretary-general Datuk Seri Dr Chen Chaw Min said the growing number of people infected by the COVID-19 virus in Malaysia is exerting pressure on the resources of government hospitals that have been designated to deal with the virus.

“This financial assistance from TNB will enable the MOH to procure urgent medical and healthcare equipment necessary for the ongoing defence against the COVID-19 virus.

“We are hopeful that other GLCs and corporations in Malaysia will join the action coalition to help us better face this pandemic,” he said.

Yesterday, another 110 new COVID -19 cases were reported in Malaysia, bringing the total number of cases to 900.

TNB president and chief executive officer, Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan, said this is a fight that “we are all in.”

“As heads of corporate companies whose successes were built on the shoulders of millions of Malaysians, we must now come together to give back,” he said.

“Collaboration between the public and private sectors now is necessary. I would like to call on my peers and colleagues across corporate Malaysia to join forces with us in these trying times, and provide critical support to our frontline healthcare workers,” said Amir Hamzah.

Corporations and organisations interested to pledge support may contact the MOH at (03)8883-3069/3076/2406.
