Homegrown Malaysian company gains momentum in global offshore industry

LABUAN , Nov 22  -- Malaysia-owned Thunder Cranes Group has secured a major multi-million dollar contract with Chevron Corporation to provide lifting services for their plug and abandonment work involving some 3000 wells in the Gulf of Thailand.

The three-year contract with Chevron will see Thunder Cranes adding a further 3 brand new TC90XL ninety-ton cranes to its fleet, making it the largest operator of portable self-lifting offshore rental cranes in the Asia-Pacific region.

Headquartered in Malaysia’s international financial hub Labuan, Thunder Cranes has been supplying cranes to facilitate offshore oil and gas projects in multiple countries for over two decades.

Its chief executive officer Chris Poheng in a statement said Thailand had been a focal point for Thunder Cranes since its entry into the market over a decade ago and the latest award demonstrated the reputation it had successfully built in the region.

“Providing an extremely niche service can make it a challenge to market Thunder Cranes’ services globally. But once we are given the opportunity to provide solutions and demonstrate our capabilities, clients often find Thunder Cranes invaluable to their projects,” he said.

Thunder Cranes has been securing business outside of Malaysia since 1999, first with Brunei Shell, followed by Devon Energy in China and Dubai Petroleum in the UAE. It then established facilities in Thailand in 2010 to become a 2nd focal point for regional operations outside of Malaysia.

“In the next 6 to 12 months we will be bidding on several major lifting contracts in the UAE, Saudi Arabia, India, Vietnam and Indonesia. We are proud to be one of the many Malaysian companies capable of competing in the global arena,” he said.

Poheng said it was a combination of unique innovations in its crane technology, as well as its experienced, highly-trained personnel that gave Thunder Cranes its edge, making it a globally competitive player.

"Delivering operational efficiencies for our clients means continuously developing both our crane technology and our human capital.

“In keeping with this philosophy, 2019 will see the launch of the 5th generation of Thunder Cranes portable crane - the TC90-05XL pedestal crane.

“The TC90XL incorporates 25 years of experience, distilled into a portable crane that can take on the challenges of offshore lifting for the next 25 years”, Poheng said.

However, he said, as important as the technology was, deployment of portable cranes offshore required highly trained and experienced staff.

“To be a global company, our customers should expect the same high standards wherever we go.

“We do this by training our people and creating a positive workplace culture with a view to having great staff retention over time. Staff retention means more experienced, knowledgeable and safer personnel, and ultimately the productivity that our clients appreciate.

“We are proud to see Malaysia has some of the most capable people in the business, including engineers who have proven they can work anywhere, and for anyone, in the world,” he added.
