KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 31 (Bernama) -- Malaysian Gas Association (MGA) organised its inaugural Forum on Cogeneration (FoC) today, providing a platform exclusively focused on cogeneration – an efficient and cleaner way of generating electric power and thermal energy, such as heat and steam, from a single fuel source.
Officiated by the Minister of Energy, Science, Technology, Environment and Climate Change (MESTECC), Yeo Bee Yin, the forum saw participation by more than 150 policymakers, regulators and industry players, it said in a statement today.
Themed “The New Driver for Energy Efficiency”, FoC highlighted the growing importance of cogeneration to the country in driving efficient conversion of energy.
In her ministerial address, Yeo emphasised that, “Cogeneration plays an important role in contributing towards achieving our climate change commitments in term of carbon emission reduction and towards achieving my Ministry’s objective of eight per cent savings from Energy Efficiency (EE) by 2025.”
Cogeneration has an enormous potential in the country provided that the environment is conducive for its growth.
MGA President Hazli Sham Kassim in his opening address alluded to the challenges being faced in promoting a wider adoption of cogeneration in the country.
To overcome them he stated that, “MGA is constantly engaging with the relevant stakeholders to address these challenges.
We are thankful that MESTECC are very supportive of our efforts in ensuring a fair playing field for cogeneration players.”
Hazli Sham noted that some of these challenges cut across sectors and jurisdictional boundaries, therefore MGA calls for the formulation of a comprehensive policy framework to align all parties to ensure that all challenges are addressed and the necessary incentives accorded to stimulate cogeneration’s continued and sustained growth.
The FoC is a platform for owners, solution providers and end-consumers to congregate and discuss the potential and challenges for cogeneration in the country. Resulting from these discussions, the forum will subsequently share workable recommendations with the relevant stakeholders for consideration in order to promote a greater adoption of cogeneration in Malaysia.
It also featured exhibition from cogeneration industry players, both local and international.
