SHAH ALAM, Oct 18 -- The younger generation must be at the forefront in efforts to address issues pertaining to nature and environmental sustainability.
Environment expert Datuk Seri Dr Ir Zaini Ujang said young people, being the internet-savvy generation, should make full use of raising awareness on the importance of taking care of the environment.
“Take ‘plogging’ as an example, it has become a trend in some countries. It is actually an activity of picking up litter while jogging but with the help of social media, it has become a success.
“Therefore, those young people who love the environment can make this kind of activity (plogging) a trend through the use of social media to encourage the community to take care of their surroundings,” he said when appearing as a guest on the Bicara Minda programme at Kompleks Karangkraf here today.
Zaini who is the national-level Tokoh Maal Hijrah 2019 award recipient called on the people, especially the younger generation, to adopt a low-carbon lifestyle.
He said this was because the increase in the amount of carbon emissions into the atmosphere had become one of the causes of global warming.
"Our society should adopt a low-carbon lifestyle such as using public transport or environment-friendly vehicles as well as energy-efficient electrical appliances,” he said.
Malaysia emitted 7.9 tonnes of carbon from the consumption of energy in 2011 compared to 5.4 tonnes in other middle-income countries.
