Sarawak to produce battery for electric, hybrid and energy-efficent vehicles

KUCHING, Oct 9  -- Sarawak is set to have its first electric, hybrid and energy-efficient vehicle (EEV) battery manufacturing factory that will cater for both, domestic and overseas markets.

The proposed RM500 million plant, to be set up in Demak Laut here, is part of a collaboration between Amalgamated Batteries Manufacturing (Sarawak) Sdn Bhd (ABM) and Jujiang Power Technology Co. Ltd of China.   

ABM deputy managing director Datuk Alan Tay Tze Poh said there was a huge market for such batteries from local and overseas automakers.

“It (the proposed plant) is still at an early stage, there will be a lot of discussions between us to finalise the details,” he told Bernama after the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the two companies here today.

ABM chairman Datuk Seri Tay Chin Kin and his counterpart from Jujiang, Wang Dong signed the MoU, witnessed by Sarawak Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg.  

ABM, incorporated in 1971, manufactures automotive batteries for domestic and export markets, including ASEAN countries, Taiwan, Australia, Middle East and African countries.  

Wang Dong in his speech said although the proposed investment was only RM500 million, they would adopt high technology for manufacturing.

“I believe that this investment is only a beginning, there will be more projects from Jujiang in the future,” he said, adding that the company was committed to contributing towards social undertakings and jobs creation in the state.

Meanwhile, Abang Johari expressed hope that both companies would not only focus on manufacturing but also to conduct research and development on lithium-ion battery recycling.

“Sarawak can be a laboratory for both companies to conduct research on lithium, either recycle or extract the lithium from old batteries and use it to (produce) other batteries. Maybe you can also create new technology so that the lithium-ion battery can be sustainable for long-term use,” he said in his speech.
