MBIC hopes govt introduces green procurement policy

KUALA LUMPUR,  Oct 8 -- Malaysia Biomass Industries Confederation (MBIC) hopes the government can come out with green procurement policy which focuses on the total support of local green products supply chain and ventures, said its president Datuk Leong Kin Mun.

“The government should unlock the potential of green procurement opportunity in Malaysia, for example between the government sector and listed companies.

“This will create a green market transformation for the whole of Malaysia and it’s a good move as the government has recognised the important role that biomass resource can contribute to the triple bottom line of sustainable development agenda for our nation,” he told Bernama.

This is important to ensure market access to all the green products produced in the country.

Malaysia's biomass industry he said has the highest potential to mobilise and drive the circular economy agenda in the country, with the agriculture sector alone generates more than 80 million tonnes of wet biomass annually, primarily from the oil palm sector.

"These biomass wastes, among others come in the form of empty fruits bunches, mill effluents, oil palm trunks, municipal waste and palm pellets.

“With the deployment of appropriate technologies and suitable business models, our biomass resources can be utilised as feedstock for the generation of bio-energy, production of bio-based polymers and eco-products,” he said.

Meanwhile, an eminent fellow at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) Tan Sri Ahmad Zaharudin Idrus hoped the government would allocate more funds to the research and development (R&D) and give grants to industries in the upcoming 2020 Budget, as these are catalysts to grow the bio-economy.

“To move forward, we should harness R&D institution, MARDI, SIRIM, PORIM, create an inventory of resources or new resources, think global, set a new vision of bio-economy, which incorporates, not only the bio aspects, but also the industrial revolution 4.0, ICT, modern agriculture and large scale food industry.

“This is because if you want to create a bigger economy, you got to think in terms of large scale production, not just producing small and we should revise the economy upscale,” he added.

Ahmad Zaharudin said the government need to set a commitment and make a statement to drive the bio-economy forward and encourages the businesses to do more.
