KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 1 -- The Ministry of Energy, Science, Technology, Environment and Climate Change has launched 'The Rainforest Canopy' concept and design for the Malaysia Pavilion at Expo 2020 Dubai, targeting RM10 billion in potential trade and investment.
Its minister Yeo Bee Yin said the expo, themed 'Connecting Minds, Creating the Future', was structured to capture 1,000 business leads and 20 memorandums of understanding or partnership agreements. It will be held for six months from October next year.
"As we are targeting big numbers for Expo 2020 Dubai, the landscape of the Malaysia Pavilion, ‘The Rainforest Canopy’, comprises different elements that best reflect our country and its rainforests.
"From 16 entries vying for the coveted spot, Hijjas Architects and Planners has successfully captured the overall objective of portraying Malaysia comprehensively by depicted nature and functionality into a futuristic design," she told reporters at the Expo 2020 Dubai: Official Announcement of the Concept and Design of the Malaysia Pavilion, here, today.
With 1,700 square metres and able to accommodate 200 booths, ‘The Rainforest Canopy’ compromises four segments - Energising Today, Energising Tomorrow, Energising Harmony and Energising Business, which will allow Malaysian to showcase the nation’s best in terms of culture, hospitality, biodiversity of its rainforests and promising business prospects.
Yeo said: “The ministry will now focus on developing the pavilion's content and programmes as the expo is expected to receive 25 million visitors and 192 participating countries, adding that 25 booths will be rotated every four to eight weeks, depending on the expo's schedule.
"To make the Malaysia Pavilion a must-visit location at the expo, we have segmented the programme into six clusters encompassing 10 industries such as science, technology, education, agriculture and IR4.0. For now, we have 18 ministries and 50 leading companies that have confirmed their participation and commitment to lead the specific areas.”
She also noted that the Malaysian External Trade Development Corporation (MATRADE) had allocated a total of RM200,000 for the participating companies, with reimbursable grants of up to RM15,000 for the successful applicants including small and medium enterprises, trade bodies and professional service providers, engaging in international export promotional activities.
Meanwhile, Hijjas Architects and Planners director Serina Hijjas said they were inspired by Malaysia's indigenous tree house and had applied a modern approach, incorporating solar energy, water harvesting and sustainably-sourced materials, reflecting passion to promote eco-friendly buildings for a sustainable and climate-conscious future.
