KUALA TERENGGANU, Sept 22 (Bernama) -- There are many unsung heroes behind the success of the country's oil and gas sector, including the Petroliam Nasional Berhad (Petronas).
Who would have thought that one of them is a village boy from Manir here who was once belittled for being poor.
Ruzlle Abd Ghani, 62, who served in Petronas for 30 years, is the first Malaysian to be given the task managing the operation division, which was once dominated by the Europeans.
Born to a labourer father and a housewife mother, the eldest of four siblings remembers a difficult childhood.
Ruzlle said they had to walk five kilometres to school everyday and he was unable to participate in any of the school’s outdoor activities even though he was a bright student at Sekolah Kebangsaan Paya Bunga and Sekolah Menengah Panji Alam.
"I still remember when people said that I could only be a shepherd and that I have no future. But I prove them wrong...with courage and determination, I could change my future,” he told Bernama here recently.
Ruzlle said he was assigned to Sudan in 1999, not only for commissioning and start up works but also guiding the local workers in operating a plant.
According to him, his three-year experience in Sudan had greatly strengthened his identity.
“We have to work under very hot weather, around 51 degrees Celsius. The most memorable time was when we were on our way back to the drilling operation area, my friend and I were stopped by soldiers who pointed their M16 at us,” he said.
After Sudan, he was also assigned to Pakistan and Indonesia and his last post was senior manager (Field Reliability Maintenance) in 2012.
Asked whether he had ever given up hopes or overburdened by the task he was given, Ruzlle said: “I regret nothing, all that was done out of interest, and for the country.”
Ruzlle also advised young people to work hard and always be on time so that the contributions of the previous generation would continue to be enjoyed together.
“I have heard people from other country praising our country. Love and appreciate our country. There is no other country like ours. Don't expect others to change it except us," he said.
