PUTRAJAYA, Sept 3 (Bernama) -- Energy, Science, Technology, Environment and Climate Change Minister Yeo Bee Yin will be leading Malaysian delegation to the 37th ASEAN Ministers on Energy Meeting and Associated Meetings (37th AMEM) from tomorrow to Sept 6 in Bangkok, Thailand.
The Ministry of Energy, Science, Technology, Environment and Climate Change (MESTECC) said in a statement today that the 37th AMEM, themed ‘Advancing Energy Transition through Partnership and Innovation’, was an important platform for Yeo to discuss and exchange views on several areas with her counterparts, namely the ASEAN Energy Ministers, East Asia Summit Energy Ministers and ASEAN 3 Energy Ministers.
These include regional energy cooperation and strengthening the international collaboration with key international energy-related organisations such as the International Energy Agency (IEA) and the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), it said.
MESTECC said ASEAN’s progress towards achieving its targets as outlined in the ASEAN Plan of Action for Energy Cooperation (APAEC) 2016-2025 (Phase I: 2016-2020), including the aspirational target of achieving 23 per cent of renewable energy in the total primary energy supply by 2025, would be discussed at the meeting.
"Malaysia will also share its success stories as well as the challenges faced in increasing the renewable energy (RE) targets in the country’s electricity mix to 20 per cent in 2025," it said.
MESTECC said the outcome of these meetings was expected to increase Malaysia’s visibility in the ASEAN energy landscape and would further enhance Malaysia’s cooperation with other ASEAN member states towards a sustainable energy future for the ASEAN region.
