KUCHING, Aug 27 -- Sarawak will start research to produce biofuel from algae with the completion of Sarawak Biodiversity Centre's (SBC) Algae Cultivation Facility at Semengoh, Padawan, here.
The 1,000 meter square outdoor facility is considered one of the largest facilities of its kind in South East Asia.
Chief Minister, Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg said the temperature and cultivation of algae at this facility will be determined by sensors.
“As well as the artificial intelligence technology embraced in the device, this definitely enables the cultivation of algae in a very sensitive environment.
“Congratulation to SBC and Mitsubishi (Corporation), I hope this facility and the cultivation of algae will produce the biofuel that you need,” he said when officially launching the facility at SBC here, today.
Meanwhile, the Chairman Of Sarawak Biodiversity Council, Tan Sri Wilson Baya Dandot said, the algae cultivation facility is estimated to produce up to six tons of dry biomass a year.
"Depending on the type application and the species of algae, this output might be enough for small scale production of aquaculture feed supply or of active ingredients for dietary supplements.
“However for larger, global scale supply chains or for biofuel production, this facility has to be scaled up many times to hundreds or thousands of hectares,” he said.
