SHAH ALAM, Aug 3 (Bernama) – Energy, Science, Technology, Environment and Climate Change Minister, Yeo Bee Yin, is concerned that less than 50 per cent of secondary school students are in the science stream.
“It’s worrying because it will have an effect on our ability to compete without science and technology graduates or manpower, especially now with Industrial Revolution 4.0 (IR4.0),” she said in her speech during the launch of National Science Week in Selangor today.
Also present were Selangor environment, green technology, science, technology and innovation, and consumer affairs committee chairman, Hee Loy Sian and Sustainable Energy Development Authority (SEDA) Malaysia chief executive officer, Ir Dr Sanjayan Velautham.
Yeo said the National Science Week this year is two-phase, with the first stage held in Kuala Lumpur, Terengganu, Sabah and Sarawak from April 1-7, and the second starting today till Aug 8 in several states concurrently.
“SEDA Malaysia will run the programme in Selangor. The organisation is closely linked to renewable energy (TBB) endeavours and I believe this nomination is perfect to showcase the Government’s progress in encouraging its development,” she said.
Elaborating further, she said SEDA Malaysia has been entrusted with promoting biomass, biogas and hydropower technology, as well as raising public awareness about energy efficiency in the hope that new energy will be better understood through the programme.
