ST told to expedite approvals in cutting off power, water supply to illegal plants

Datuk Mohamad Yasid Bidin

KLANG, June 20 (Bernama) -- The Klang Municipal Council (MPK) has urged the Energy Commission (ST) to speed up its approval in cutting off electricity and water supply to illegal plastic factories that are still operating in the area.

MPK President Datuk Mohamad Yasid Bidin, said the company has sent a list of 30 illegal plastic plants to the commission for approval so that the involved agencies could disconnect the supply of both utilities to the factories.

He said the illegal plastic factories which were said to be active despite the raids were located at Telok Gong, Pulau Indah and Sobena Jaya Industrial Park.

"We had earlier carried out a raid with Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) and Syarikat Bekalan Air Selangor (Syabas), to disconnect water and power supply, but it could not be done as it had not been approved by ST.

"The owners of these plants are aware that MPK’s powers are limited. Although we have given stop-work orders, issued compounds and also  raided the premises, they can still operate as they have electricity and water supply,” he told reporters at a MBK Aidilfitri event at Taman Pengkalan Batu, here today.

Mohamad Yasid said the council was expecting ST’s cooperation in expediting the approval of  applications to disconnect utility supplies at the illegal factories so that its efforts to curb their activities could be carried out smoothly.

On June 3, Selangor Local Government, Public Transportation and New Village Development Committee chairman Ng Sze Han, said the delay by the utility companies in cutting off electricity and water supply to the factories, had slowed down MPK's efforts in completely shutting down their operations..

Ng said that according to other local authorities in the state, efforts to curb illegal plastic plants could only be done when such premises no longer had access to electricity and water supply.

Earlier at the ceremony, chairman of the Permanent Committee on Culture, Tourism, Malay Civilisation and Selangor Heritage, Datuk Abdul Rashid Asari, presented Aidilfitri cash gifts to 120 differently-abled asnaf (eligible to receive tithes) people and the underprivileged.
