SEMPORNA, May 22 (Bernama) -- Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP), has for the first time, extended its reach to Borneo, bringing solar power for use by the local community, thus adding cheer to the approaching Aidilfitri celebration.
Its vice-chancellor, Prof Dr R. Badlishah Ahmad said the solar technology was installed at Masjid Tuanku Syed Faizuddin Jamalullail, a focal point for over 300 members of the Kampung Engang-Engang Melanu community, here.
"Through this system, the lighting at the ablution area and toilets is fully generated through solar panels installed on the roof of the mosque where the power generated in the day time is kept in batteries and used at night.
"This not save costs but is also good for environmental conservation through power production from a renewable source," he said when met by reporters after delivering his speech at the corporate social responsibility programme in Pulau Bum Bum, here, today.
The solar system was launched by the Raja Muda of Perlis, Tuanku Syed Faizuddin Putra Jamalullail, who is also UniMAP chancellor and commander of Regiment 504 of the Territorial Army, in conjunction with the Perlis-Sabah Exercise (Ex Perbah) 2019, which ended today.
Badlishah said UniMAP had also upgraded the lighting system at the mosque to give more comfort to its congregation.
An information board on the solar system has also been installed as reference for the local community to understand the operations of the natural power-generation system.
Badlishah said this effort proved that UniMAP not only contributed technology but there was also transfer of knowledge for the benefit of the local community.
With enthusiastic support from the local community amid a cheerful atmosphere, the installation of the UniMAP solar system was also assisted by members of Regiment 504 of the Territorial Army.
