KUCHING, May 6 (Bernama) -- Oil and gas was among the major commodities that continuously contributed to the Sarawak economy in the first two months of this year, the State Legislative Assembly was told today.
Entrepreneur and Small, Medium Enterprise Development Assistant Minister Datuk Mohd Naroden Majais said as of February 2019, oil and gas contributed 64.85 per cent followed by manufactured goods (24.02 per cent), agricultural products (10.61 per cent) and other merchandises (0.53 per cent).
“The products of Sarawak, particularly the major commodities such as oil and gas, manufactured goods and agriculture products have always been sought after in the global market due to their high quality,” he said when replying to Dennis Ngau (GPS-Telang Usan).
During the first two months of this year, he said export receipts from liquefied natural gas (LNG) remained the biggest contributor at 48.3 per cent, followed by crude petroleum at 11.1 per cent and palm oil at 7.8 per cent.
Overall, he said Sarawak recorded a total trade value of RM24.5 billion in the first two months of 2019, an increase of 9.1 per cent compared to the same period last year.
A total trade value of RM22.4 billion was recorded from January to February last year.
Mohd Naroden said although Sarawak exported agriculture products, the volume was considered small compared to the potential demand for local fruits such as durian, rambutan, pineapple, mango and banana, which were highly sought after by countries like China.
On import items, he said the higher importation of machinery and transport equipment of 33.8 per cent of the total exports was for the construction of many major infrastructure developments in the state.
Replying to a supplementary question from Ngau, he said the majority of Orang Ulu were involved in the handicraft industry which generated RM6.2 million in revenue for 201 Orang Ulu entrepreneurs last year as well as in the oil and gas industry.
