KUALA NERUS, May 1 (Bernama) -- Institut Teknologi Petroleum Petronas (INSTEP), established in 1981, is a global-standard technical training institute that has produced and trained over 14,000 professionals in the oil and gas (O&G) industry.
The Petroleum Technology Programme held at its Batu Rakit, Terengganu campus encompasses electrical, instrumentation, laboratory, mechanical, process and production training.
Katherine Manus, 33, an engineer from Papua New Guinea who has taken up three courses, affirmed that the training has helped her and Oil Search Limited (OSL) colleagues who have been coming here since March, tremendously.
“The first stage of the training was related to exploration and production, the second stage involved processing and mechanical facets, while the third provided exposure to the electrical and instrumentation aspects, which was new for me.
“The training truly helped deepen my understanding of how an O&G company operates and will certainly facilitate my job, because as a mechanical engineering graduate, I will be working with other departments in the organisation,” she said.
Oman Gas Company (OGC) mechanical engineer, Ali Al-Arrashi, 42, who is undergoing two-months’ grounding in liquid petroleum gas (LPG) as preparation for opening a LPG plant in his country, said: “My company chose Instep based on a recommendation by another O&G company, the Oman Oil Company (ORPIC), which has sent many of its employees for training here.
“After doing its research, my company felt confident in the credibility of Instep and sent nine skilled workers at first, to be followed by another 40 technicians who will receive training,” said Ali, an Omani who has been with OGC for 20 years now.
Petronas east coast regional office general manager, Datuk Wan Mohd Hasnan Abdullah, told Benama that INSTEP has trained people in the O&G field from 30 countries, including Sudan, Turkmenistan and Singapore.
He said that INSTEP doesn’t just keep abreast of technology, but plays a much bigger role as a technology transfer centre.
Apart from its 50-strong teaching staff which is made up of Malaysians, INSTEP's success is also due to its world-class facilities and recognition from international body, the Offshore Petroleum Industry Training Organisation (OPITO), since 2015.
“INSTEP has invested more than RM250 million to construct a simulated petroleum plant that includes upstream and downstream training, complete with a control centre,” he said of the Petronas Technical Training Sdn Bhd-run institute which has earned itself a proud reputation for bringing forth experts.
