Petronas Chemicals’ Pengerang Plants to start production in Q4

KUALA LUMPUR, April 29 (Bernama) -- Petronas Chemicals Group Bhd’s (PCG) petrochemical plants at the Pengerang Integrated Complex (PIC) are progressing well at 98 per cent completion.

PCG chairman Datuk Md Arif Mahmood said the plants are expected to start commercial operations in the fourth quarter of 2019.

“Typically, we do not forecast when we will begin full commercial production of the new plants.

“When we start, we'll see a production of about 50 per cent (against the capacity) to see how the plants perform and then we will start to ramp up next year,” he told a press conference after PCG’s annual general meeting here today.

Md Arif said due to the gradual ramp-up of production, the new commercial operation is not expected to contribute significantly to the group’s revenue in financial year 2019.

He said the fire at PIC earlier this month only affected the atmospheric residue desulphurisation unit, which is a component in the refinery process that takes care of the sulphur content in crude oil.

“It is not related to the petrochemical process, which means commissioning will still continue while the affected part will be isolated,” said Md Arif.

PIC's total petrochemicals production capacity will be 3.3 million tonnes per annum.

Md Arif said operations at other production facilities in the country are expected to be sustained at a utilisation rate of above 85 per cent.
