RHT committed to preserve nature despite active mining operations

IPOH, April 29 (Bernama) -- Mining company Rahman Hydraulic Tin Sdn Bhd (RHT) in Klian Intan, Pengkalan Hulu, has always prioritised on environmental management and sustainability in its day-to-day operations.

RHT senior general manager Madzlan Zam said the 100-year-old company, arguably the oldest mining company in the country, has allocated millions of ringgit annually to protect the environment, particularly to prevent arsenic pollution in nearby rivers including Sungai Rui.

He said RHT, located about 170km from Ipoh, has never dumped the ‘discharge water’ into the river, instead it was kept in tailing ponds to be treated with hydrated lime before being recycled.

“We use closed circuit water recycle system, where the water collected is treated to reach a pH level of 8 so it becomes alkaline, and the samples from the pond as well as its surrounding areas are collected, analysed daily and sent to the Mineral and Geoscience Department (JMG) for monitoring purposes.

“However, if there is acidic water from outside of the RHT pond that flows into the river, this could not be avoided because geologically, this area is a tin mineralisation area within the tin belt that contains arsenic residue,” he told Bernama recently.

Madzlan was commenting on the issue of arsenic pollution in Sungai Rui causing Ayer Ganda water treatment plant in Gerik to stop operations since April 9, which affected about 1,500 residents.

He said the company used 10 one-tonne bags of lime daily and each costing about RM4,000 each to treat the water in the tailing ponds.

Besides, he added, RHT has a long-term plan when the mine ceased its operations by planting high-value timber trees such as meranti in collaboration with the Forest Research Institute Malaysia (FRIM) for the past eight years.

He explained that 32 hectares of the total 701 hectares of mining area have been planted with high-value trees which were expected to benefit the public in the future.
