KUALA LUMPUR, April 27 (Bernama) -- The Ministry of Primary Industries is in talks with the Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI) to include the "B20/B30-ready" specification for vehicles in the review of the National Automotive Policy (NAP), its minister, Teresa Kok Suh Sim said.
She said the ministry was also preparing to produce palm oil biofiber for the aviation industry.
“This is to fulfill our commitment as a member of the International Civil Aviation Organizstion (ICAO) to adopt and implement the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA) which is aimed at addressing carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions for the international aviation sector.
“This is an innovative and consumer-friendly approach. In line with the commitment to supporting environmental sustainability based on CORSIA regulations, airlines producing CO2 exceeding 10,000 tonnes a year should report their carbon emission data from January 2019 for monitoring," she told a media briefing marking the one-year anniversary of the Pakatan Harapan government on Thursday.
Kok said this regulation would be mandatory for all international flights from 2027.
The use of palm oil biojet has been accepted by CORSIA as one of the initiatives to reduce carbon emissions.
This biodiesel and biojet programme is an innovative approach with the increasing use of environmentally-friendly palm oil biodiesel through the B10 Programme (a blend of 10 per cent oil palm biodiesel and 90 per cent diesel) for the transport sector beginning Feb 1, 2019.
Meanwhile, the B7 Programme will be introduced for the industrial sector beginning July 1, 2019.
"This biodiesel improvement plan has actually been postponed since 2016 but as soon as Pakatan Harapan took over the administration, we accelerated the implementation to encourage the use of renewable energy, as well as to increase the use of palm oil.
“Both programmes are expected to use 761,000 tonnes of palm oil a year.
"In fact, the ministry is preparing to implement the B20/B30 programme as early as 2020 and a collaborative effort with industry stakeholders and related ministries such as MITI and the Ministry of Transport is underway," he said.
