Expanding green technology at RSA area

KLUANG, April 25 (Bernama) -- The rest and service (RSA) area in Machap (North-bound) along the North-South Expressway has become the first RSA area in the country to use an alternative energy technology, namely photovoltaic solar energy for energy supply.

Works Minister Baru Bian said PLUS Malaysia Berhad (PLUS) invested about RM700,000 to develop the technology, which is one of the more advanced approaches and innovative highway concessions to expand green technology.

He said the PLUS Green Halatuju Plan (Green Roadmap) used for the technology also supported the government's call to protect and conserve the environment through the use of renewable energy.

"The photovoltaic solar technology has a capacity of 182 kilowattpeak (kWp) and started operating since October last year. It has helped PLUS save electricity consumption by 51 percent, during the day.

"Previously, the payment for electricity at the RSA Machap area had reached RM45,000 a month, but now we are able to save about RM13,000," he said.

He was speaking to reporters at the opening of the first Photovoltaic Solar System launched at an RSA area in Malaysia at Machap (North-bound). Also present was PLUS Chairman, Tan Sri Mohd Sheriff Mohd Kassim.

According to Baru, the solar technology also contributed to the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions by about 77 metric tons since its introduction, thereby helping reduce the level of depletion of the ozone layer.

He said the system panels were installed on the roof of the RSA Machap area, its food court,  the pedestrian walkway as well as the parking area for buses.

He added that PLUS intended to extend the use of solar technology in 10 RSA areas within five years.

“They are at the RSA Ayer Keroh (North), Gurun (North and South), Tapah (North and South), Gunung Semanggol (South), Dengkil (North and South) and two overhead restaurants at Ayer Keroh and Sungai Buloh,” he said.
